Terms of Service
Effective date: October 3, 2026 · Version 2026-10-03
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Net Worth Snapshot (the "Service"). You accept them when you create an account, and by continuing to use the Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service. We record the version of these Terms you accepted and when you accepted it.
1. The Service
Net Worth Snapshot lets you record account balances you enter yourself and view your household's net worth over time. It is a record-keeping and visualization tool. It is not a bank, broker, or financial institution, and it does not connect to or transact with your financial accounts.
2. Not financial advice
The Service, including any figures, projections, likelihoods, or educational content it provides, is for informational and educational purposes only and is not financial, investment, tax, retirement, or legal advice. We are not your financial advisor, broker, or fiduciary, and no advisory relationship is created by your use of the Service. Nothing in the Service is a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any security, or to adopt any particular savings, spending, retirement, or tax strategy. You are responsible for your own financial decisions and should consult a qualified professional who knows your full situation before acting on anything you see here.
This applies in full to the Ask assistant (section 3), and it is worth being plain about why, because that feature will discuss a decision with you rather than only read a figure back. It may explain general principles, apply them to the figures you recorded, and set out options and what each one trades away. That is general guidance and educational content, not a personalised recommendation, and it does not make us or the model your advisor, broker, or fiduciary. The model has never met you and cannot see the things a real recommendation turns on — your tax situation, your employer's plan, your insurance, your health, your job security, or your tolerance for a bad year — and it cannot know what you have not entered here.
3. The Ask assistant
Ask is an optional feature that answers questions using a language model operated by OpenAI. It is off until a member of your household saves an OpenAI API key in household settings. Using it means accepting the following, in addition to section 2 above:
- Answers can be wrong, and some errors are invisible. The model performs its own arithmetic on your figures and draws on general financial knowledge that we do not verify and that may be out of date — a contribution limit, a tax rule, or a threshold from the wrong year reads exactly like a figure you typed. It may also phrase the same question's answer differently each time it is asked. Check anything you would act on. We do not warrant that any answer is accurate, current, or complete.
- Answers can draw on web pages we do not control. The assistant may search a fixed list of government and financial websites and use what it finds. We choose that list, but we do not write, check, or endorse what those pages say, and a figure taken from one is no more verified than one the model already knew. A link to a page under an answer is a citation, not a recommendation of the site or of anything it offers.
- You supply the key, and you are bound by OpenAI's terms. Requests are made under your household's own OpenAI account. You are responsible for obtaining that key lawfully, for complying with OpenAI's terms of service and usage policies, and for everything done with the key through this Service.
- You pay for it. Every question is billed by OpenAI to the account the key belongs to. We do not meter, cap, or limit that spend, and we are not responsible for any charge it incurs.
- A key covers the whole household. Once one is saved, every member of the household can use Ask and spend against that key, and each of their questions sends the household's recorded figures to OpenAI. Whoever saves a key is accepting that on the household's behalf. Any member can remove it, which turns the feature off for everyone.
- What is sent, and what we cannot control. The data that leaves this Service, and the retention and review settings that govern it once it arrives, are described in our Privacy Policy, section 3. Those settings belong to your OpenAI account and are outside our control.
- It may change or go away. Ask is a feature we may modify, restrict, or withdraw at any time under section 9.
4. Projections, estimates, and likelihoods
The Service includes planning tools that project your finances into the future — retirement scenarios, FIRE, Coast and Barista numbers, goal pace and "on track" status, Social Security estimates, and a modelled percentage describing how often a scenario's money lasted. You should understand what these are before you rely on them:
- They are illustrations, not predictions or guarantees. They show what a simplified model produces from the assumptions you entered. They do not forecast what will happen, and no outcome shown is promised or assured.
- They are only as good as your inputs. Balances, salaries, birth years, expected returns, inflation, spending, and life events are all entered by you. We do not verify any of them. Small changes to an assumption can move a projected result by a very large amount.
- The model is deliberately simplified. It does not attempt to reproduce your actual tax situation, and it omits or approximates many real-world factors. The specific simplifications are listed on our How the projections work page, which is part of these Terms. Read it before treating any projected figure as meaningful.
- A percentage is not a probability of your real outcome. Where the Service shows a likelihood, it is the share of simulated runs that succeeded under one assumed pattern of market volatility. It reflects the model, not your portfolio, and it is not a measure of real-world risk.
- Figures may be shown in today's dollars. Amounts labelled as real or inflation-adjusted are not the nominal amounts you would see in an account statement.
- Results change as the tool changes. We refine the model over time. A figure you saw previously may differ after an update, and we do not retain or reproduce earlier versions of a projection.
Actual results will differ, likely materially. Past performance and modelled performance are not indicative of future results. You agree not to rely on any output of the Service as the sole basis for a financial decision, and you accept that any decision you make from it is yours alone.
5. Your account
- You must provide a valid email address and are responsible for keeping access to that inbox secure, since login is by one-time email code.
- You are responsible for the activity that occurs under your account.
- You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to use the Service.
6. Subscription and payment
- What it costs. $48.00 per year, in US dollars. There is one plan. It is billed once a year, and there is no monthly option.
- Free trial. A new household gets 30 days free. We do not ask for a payment method to start one, and nothing is charged unless you choose to subscribe.
- Automatic renewal. A subscription renews automatically each year at the price then in effect, until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from the Subscription page. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not shorten the year you have already paid for, and it is not a refund.
- If a payment fails. We retry it and email you. Your account keeps working normally for 14 days while you update your payment details.
- If you stop subscribing. Your account becomes read-only rather than closed. Everything you have entered stays visible, and the spreadsheet export keeps working, for as long as the account exists. What stops is adding and changing data. We do not delete your financial history because a subscription lapsed.
- Refunds. Charges are not refundable, including for a partly used year, except where the law requires otherwise. The free 30-day trial exists so that you can decide before paying anything, and cancelling stops the next renewal.
- Price changes. We may change the price. A change never applies to a period you have already paid for, and we will email you before it affects a renewal.
- Payment processing and seller of record. Payments are handled by Paddle, which acts as the seller of record for your subscription: Paddle is the merchant you buy from, its name appears on your card statement, and paying is also subject to Paddle's own buyer terms. We never receive or store your card details.
- Taxes. Any sales tax or VAT due on your subscription is calculated, collected and remitted by Paddle as seller of record. The amount is shown to you before you pay.
- Accounts that pre-date charging. Households created before the Service began charging remain free permanently. We will not start billing them.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of these Terms.
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other accounts, or our systems.
- Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the Service.
- Reverse engineer or attempt to extract source code except as permitted by law.
8. Your data
The financial data you enter remains yours. You grant us a limited license to store and process it solely to provide the Service to you and your household members. How we handle your data is described in our Privacy Policy and Security pages, which are part of these Terms.
9. Availability
We work to keep the Service running reliably, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features at any time. We will make a reasonable effort to let you export your data before any planned discontinuation of the Service.
10. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be accurate, complete, or error-free.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Net Worth Snapshot and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of the Service.
12. Termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms. On termination, we will handle your data as described in our Privacy Policy.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date and version above. For a material change we may ask you to accept the revised Terms before continuing to use the Service. Otherwise, your continued use after the changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
